Four games that need no installer
for the hours the yarn is drying

Tarred yarn hangs until it stops dripping and nothing anybody does will hurry it, which leaves long gaps in this trade with nothing to fill them. These four free-to-play games fill them honestly: not one asks for an installer, a launcher or a patch, so you open a tab, register, and you are playing inside a minute. Between them there is an empire whose fleets take real hours to arrive, a gladiator sent out on timed expeditions, a stable to keep, and three minutes of pure nonsense in a kart.

OGame key art
01 · Space empire strategy

OGame

Mines feed research, research unlocks hulls, and a fleet sent across the system is genuinely gone for hours — visible, catchable and not coming home early. It is the game the rest of the genre has been measured against for twenty years, and it still does not forgive leaving a fleet parked at home overnight.

Good for
Strategists who want a mistake to cost something real.
Typical session
Short check-ins, twice a day
Where it runs
Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Cost
Free to play; optional in-game purchases.
Your first session
  1. Build mines well past the point where it feels dull; everything later is paid for out of them.
  2. Scout before you send anything, because a fleet sent blind is usually a fleet lost.
  3. Learn what fleet-saving means in your first week rather than your second.

Gladiatus key art
02 · Roman arena RPG

Gladiatus

Expeditions tick down in real time and come back with gear and gold, the arena resolves duels whether you are watching or not, and the dungeons hold the pieces worth having. The loop is short enough for a tea break and old enough to have been tuned properly.

Good for
Players who want a character to visit rather than a world to live in.
Typical session
Ten minutes, morning and evening

Cost
Free to play; optional in-game purchases.
Your first session
  1. Send an expedition out before you close the tab; it finishes while you are gone.
  2. Spend on gear rather than on cosmetics early, because the arena is unkind to the underdressed.
  3. Join a guild for the group dungeons; solo clears stop paying fairly quickly.

Horse Farm key art
03 · Horse-keeping sim

Horse Farm

Grooming, feeding and training a stable of horses while the farm around them pays for it. Crops and upgrades fund the next arrival, the goals are suggestions rather than demands, and nothing in it ever raises its voice.

Good for
Anyone who wants fifteen quiet minutes and something to look after.
Typical session
Fifteen minutes a day
Where it runs
Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Cost
Free to play; optional in-game purchases.
Your first session
  1. Feed and groom before anything else; a neglected horse undoes a day of training.
  2. Plant crops whose timers land near when you expect to be back at the desk.
  3. Expand the stable only after the feed supply is comfortably ahead of it.

Smash Karts key art
04 · Kart combat

Smash Karts

Drive an arena, grab weapon crates, fire rockets at up to seven other people and try not to park on a mine. Matches last about three minutes, the coins feed a prize machine full of karts and characters, and there is nothing whatever to learn first.

Good for
Anybody who wants silly and immediate rather than skilful.
Typical session
A few minutes at a time
Where it runs
Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Cost
Free to play; optional in-game purchases.
Your first session
  1. Keep moving; a stationary kart is a target and nothing else.
  2. Pick up every crate you pass, even holding a weapon already.
  3. Treat the prize machine as decoration, because none of it changes how the kart drives.

What no download actually means

Nothing is installed. All four run inside the browser already on the machine, which is why a borrowed laptop or a locked-down work computer is usually no obstacle at all.

Each studio keeps a shop inside its own game, selling premium currency, ornaments and timer skips. None of it is needed to play properly and plenty of people never touch any of it. Where a computer is shared with children, set the spending controls on the studio account before handing it over.

The first quarter of an hour

Follow the link under any game and the studio’s own site opens in a fresh tab. Register there, usually with an email address and a password, and the world loads in the same window a moment later.

Give the opening tutorial your attention on that first visit. Three of these four introduce resources, timers and other players in a deliberate order, and skipping ahead only means relearning it clumsily a week later.

Fitting one around a working day

Three of these keep their own time. Mines fill, expeditions resolve and horses get hungry whether the tab is open or not, which makes two short visits a day a perfectly respectable way to play.

Save the real decisions — a colonisation run, a gear rebuild, a new stable wing — for an evening when you are not watching the clock. Short visits are for collecting and restarting, nothing more.

Looking after four separate logins

Every account belongs to its own studio and never to us, so type the password only on that studio’s own pages. Give each game its own password and switch on any second sign-in step offered.

No real member of a support team will ever ask for a password in a game chat, a forum reply or an email. Anyone promising free premium currency for a login is after the account itself.

Why these four stay in the bookmarks bar

  • Not one of the four has an installer or a launcher behind it. The browser already on the machine is the whole requirement.
  • Registering is free in every case and nothing has to be paid later; the shops inside sell shortcuts and ornament, never entry.
  • Three of them keep running with the tab shut, so a five-minute look still moves something along.
  • All four have been going for years under studios that still update them, and there are people online at most hours.

None at all. All four open in an ordinary desktop browser and start the moment you have registered, with no launcher and no patching to sit through.

No. Registering and playing are free in every case, and each shop holds optional extras rather than anything that gates the game itself.

They are not. Four separate studios build and run them, and our buttons simply open each official site so you can register there.

No. Each studio handles its own sign-up, so expect four registrations and four passwords.

OGame, Horse Farm and Smash Karts each publish a phone app besides the browser build, which you are welcome to ignore. Gladiatus names no app at all and would rather you brought a keyboard.

Horse Farm, for the gentlest start by a distance. Smash Karts if you have three minutes and no patience whatever.

In three of them, a great deal. Mines fill, expeditions return and horses need feeding regardless, which is why looking in twice a day keeps you level. The kart arena is the exception: nothing there happens without you.
